The world began to load as a diffuse, light-permeated haze. I had no body to perceive the haze with – no eyes, no limbs – but nonetheless the haze began to accrue details, patches of denseness. Knots of smoke curled into ever tighter whorls. The universe acquired a sense of solidity.

I felt the floor under my bare feet. Warm, polished hardwood floorboards. I became fully aware of my body – taller, more muscular than my real life physique, and a touch more well endowed, but in the main I was simply a more handsome, but recognisable version of me.

The details of the room I was in loaded last; baroquely curlicued wisps smoke clumping, congealing, thickening finally into solid, impermeable reality.

A wardrobe. A dresser. Two windows set into one wall, magazines scattered over the wide sills. Sunlight lazily drifting diagonally onto an unmade bed. Duvet whorled into the shape of a recently vacated body on one side; the other side unslept in. A chair in the corner with a pair of jeans draped over one arm.

They say that slowrez is easier for the mind to accommodate – that the brain has difficulty with the jumpcuts in reality that modern day virtual networks are capable of. It’s really the only reason my apartment in New Amsterdam doesn’t kick in instantaneously. After all, VR can run at a clock speed ninety-six times that of RL, depending on the domain – it’s not like we aren’t already living accelerated existences in here. A day in VR can cost just 15 minutes in real life, if I’m in a highly accelerated domain. I can live 2 weeks in VR between breakfast and lunch, and have my experiences decompressed back into the wet storage media of my brain in a matter of minutes.

I shrugged. Of the many, many contradictions one has to accommodate as result of VR becoming so prevalent, psychological crutches like slowrez are hardly worth thinking too much about. There are bigger mindfucks floating around.

Like this one: one can now spend much more time online than one is actually alive in RL. By an order of magnitude, if not two.

I took a deep breath, exhaled, letting my body settle around me. Accepting it, the reality of this room. It wasn’t hard, since, perceptually speaking, it was indistinguishable from reality. I looked around.

It was actually not a bad little apartment, as things go in New Amsterdam. I smiled as I thought of the elderly gentleman realtor who showed me around the place before I signed the lease. He’d been so much in character that I was almost certain he was an AI ‘bot, but couldn’t work up the courage to ask. I would have offended him either way.

In keeping with its billing as “the truest, most authentic New York experience”, real estate in New Amsterdam is scarce. I was lucky to find a place in Manhattanville at all. Virtual space stacking isn’t allowed in New Amsterdam – the Domain charter is a stickler for real-world rules: no super powers, no non-human avatars, no non-euclidean geometry; in short, no breaking the illusion, the consensual reality. So square footage actually has value in this city.

I had a one bedroom, with a view onto Gramercy Park. I considered myself lucky.

I glanced down at my now fully incorporated flesh. I was still wearing the t-shirt and jeans I’d been wearing when I logged out yesterday. I walked over to the dresser and picked up my PA. New Amsterdam’s clock speed was set to four times RL. I’d logged out Sunday, which made this Thursday. 8 AM.

The job interview was at 10 AM. Just enough time to get ready.

Another of the ironies of VR was that accessing it was so expensive you had to either be rich, or – like me – find work inside, earning money at an increased clock rate proportional to the rate at which you accessed it. It was a vicious cycle. At my current job – as a human behavioral analyst for a firm run by a bunch of AIs – I logged 160 hours a week.

Gone were the days of highly-paid programmers. These days all the plum high tech work was taken by AIs. If you wanted to make money in VR, you had to do work where a human touch was required – either by advising AIs how to market to humans, or by doing customer service work, from sales (still a lucrative job) to personal assistants to wait staff – anywhere a human needed to be parted with his or her money, in short.

I hated my current job. Advising AIs as to what new cloud-cluster VR widget toy would appeal to five year olds when I hardly had a good idea myself was just frustrating.

I was mainly in VR to satisfy certain urges. The job was just a means to that, and a way of possibly earning enough to realize those needs in real life someday.

True nano-induced sex changes were damned expensive. Besides, I still wasn’t fully sold on the idea of “going to the other side”, so to speak. I quite enjoyed sex as a man…even if I often fantasized I was on the receiving end, even in the middle of the act.

I yanked my t-shirt over my head and began to unbuckle my jeans as I walked over to the dresser.

This job…I didn’t know what to think of it yet.

“Transgendered MtF applicants required for service work in a private Male Dominion themed Domain. Successful applicants will serve in female avatars. Our contractual obligations, while strict, comply fully with legislation in the United States and the EU. Appear for your interview in female form, dressed appropriately for the office.”

All I knew is that the ad pushed all kinds of buttons for me. When in female form, all the sexual play I’d engaged in so far had been strictly as a submissive. And there really was only one way to find out more about it – go to the interview.

I was naked now. I kicked the jeans away and concentrated.

My User Control flipped into my virtual vision, and I toggled with a virtual hand, selecting my “Stephanie” avatar.

I watched in the mirror as my body slowly shrank, flowing into the short, slender frame I’d come to prefer after a little experimentation. The visual effect was like watching water flow over stones, shaping them in accelerated time. Physically, the experience was always a little jarring. VR aimed for true, immersive representation – you could feel your own heartbeat, your own breathing, feel full or hungry or horny. Since all of those depended on body representation – internal organs included – changing form meant sensory overload if you didn’t tamp down the sensation sliders.

I liked feeling the difference. I liked feeling my muscles grow thinner, weaker. There was a strange thrill in feeling my pelvis changing shape under my muscles, in feeling my tight, tough gluteous muscles shrink and soften as thick layers of fat enveloped them.

I became acutely aware of my sudden femininity, especially this body’s differences from the body I was born into; the thicker hips, the lower center of gravity, the soft tugging weight of breasts, moving, changing shape gently as I turned to examine my slim figure in the mirror.

“Stephanie” was five feet even, 105 pounds, with an attractive pixie face surrounded by thick, loose curls of black hair. She wasn’t a supermodel; just very pretty with a lingering aura of innocence that could be partly credited to her age – she was 18 years old.

I was 18, that is. I am Stephanie Jones.

I smiled, and waved a hand over the dresser before opening it. Panties and bras had replaced boxers; I grabbed one of my favorite thongs and slipped my legs into it, pulling it up over my hips.

Dress for success, I thought. Well, I’d certainly try. I started sifting through my wardrobe.

Chapter 2

I stepped out of the taxi into a heavy rain, which I hadn’t planned for, really. I held my purse over my head as I ran as best I could to the office building awning. I’ve never been able to get used to heels, much to my chagrin. They’re sexy looking as hell, but I tend to walk like Frankenstein’s bride with a torn achilles heel. It’s only sexy when I’m not moving at all, in short. All in all, a bad idea, I thought to myself ruefully.

The doorman opened the door for me, and I walked into the small foyer.

I took the elevator up to the 11th floor, still dripping wet. I tugged at my white button down shirt, to try to get the starched cotton not to cling so much to my shoulders and especially my breasts. I debated turning around right then…but something in me wanted to persevere. What’s the worst that could happen, right? I wouldn’t get the job. Okay. I could live with that.

I opened the door to Suite 1145, which opened into a small room furnished with a wooden desk. The walls were completely unadorned. It wasn’t at all what I expected – I envisioned a large office space with a receptionist, but not a blank, anonymous rent-a-desk. A man in a suit was sitting behind the desk. He looked up and smiled.

“Come in, Miss Jones,” he said, gesturing to the front of the desk. “Stand right there, please.”

There were no chairs. I hesitated.

He frowned. “Our advertisement was designed to appeal to a very narrow demographic, Miss Jones. You know why you are here.” His eyes narrowed. “You came here of your own free will, and are welcome to turn around and close the door behind you. Or you can do as I asked, and stand right there,” he added, pointing to the spot in front of the desk. “You can give your purse to me.”

I took a tentative step forward, then walked nervously to the front of his desk. I put my purse on the desk, and he calmly pulled it to him and put it to one side on a table behind him. In sight, but out of my reach.

He turned back to me and smiled again, as if to say, “Sorry, but you know – protocol.” His eyes unapologetically ranged over my body. I blushed.

“Still raining, I see,” he said dryly. “No umbrella?”

“No,” I replied, “I kind of rushed out the door. May I dry out, please?” I asked. Now that I was in a private space, Domain rules could be bent – just as I could change my avatar in my own apartment, I could reset my clothing here, if given local edit privileges.

“No,” he said in a matter of fact tone. “I’ll explain in a moment our viewpoint on females and their privileges. You look drenched. And yet you kept your appointment, even looking like this.” He said this as a statement, not a question. “Why?”

“Because…” I said slowly, not sure how to answer, “I don’t know. I think I felt it was more important somehow to keep the appointment than how I felt about my appearance.”

“You were right, actually. We don’t rebook interviews. Each applicant gets exactly one shot. In case you haven’t guessed, this is not where you’d be working.”

“I guessed,” I said, smiling. “The ad said something about a separate Domain. I just figured your New Amsterdam office would be more…”

“Imposing?” he finished, grinning. “We don’t keep much of a presence here. Our only reason for coming to this Domain is to recruit alpha males and their servants.” He leaned back and folded his arms. “Which brings us to the position…I am recruiting specifically for males who, from our perspective, have no business being male. That includes some who don’t have your particular sexual makeup, but the majority are self-identified transgender individuals. What you long for, we enforce.”

“Enforce?” I asked quizzically. “How do you mean?”

“We’ll get to that later. For now, you can expect that we will ensure that you are kept in your proper place.” He grinned.

“You should first and foremost understand that the Domain where our House is located is a Male Dominion,” he continued. “Females are not permitted edit privileges of any kind whatsoever. That means, for one thing, that any female avatars logging into our domain cannot change their physical form. They remain female while within our Domain, as they should.” He paused. “Females cannot access any VR functions at all, in fact – they cannot tamp down physical sensations, like pain, they cannot heal injury. If a female is punished in our Domain – and they are often punished – they bear the mark of that punishment until it heals naturally.” He smiled coldly. “Again, as it should be.”

“There are other restrictions imposed upon females, but it boils down to this: when you are in our Domain, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – to indicate in any way that you are not in the real world. Your User Control isn’t just disabled – it’s not present. In the codebase our Domain runs on, females have no control over the environment, their appearance or anything else. Period. They are trapped in their bodies until and unless we grant them freedom.

“For all intents and purposes, you will live in our Domain not as a female avatar – you will live as a female. And it should be noted that one of the consequences of living fully immersed is that you will have no way of logging yourself out. A male must do this for you, and therefore logging is done only by permission. You have to ask permission to log, and you may be denied that permission.”

I think by this point my jaw was hanging open, because he grinned again. “Come now, Stephanie, you surely must have guessed what this arrangement might entail? All of this, by the way, conforms to international law. Once we have your initial consent, you are owned. And you’ll be kept as one would any livestock: shackled if we choose, branded if it pleases us, and used on demand.”

“You’re talking about slavery,” I replied, my voice a little shaky. My heart was racing, and the room seemed suddenly very small.

“Yes,” he said, nodding affirmatively. “I’m talking about slavery. Our contract gives us full control over your online life. We will be able to do whatever we like with you. But let’s be clear, Stephanie. You are here, in fact, because the idea of being feminized and enslaved turns you on. It’s the main reason you walked through that door, isn’t it? Because something about that ad made you wonder, anticipate, fantasize about what happen to you if you did.”

I flushed, but said nothing, unsure of how to respond.

“That is the purpose of this interview process,” he continued. “Not to seek out prospective employees, but to determine the suitability of potential slaves.”

I shifted uncomfortably and crossed my arms. “And…how will you determine that?”

He smiled. He took something from a drawer and placed it on the desk. I leaned forward to take a look. It was a small ring, a simple gold band with a small ruby setting.

“You’ll determine that in the end. When you’re ready, you will wear this ring.”

“And?” I asked.

“Some of the restrictions I just described will be applied in stages. I can’t be specific as to which, and when. I will say that you will have very little say in the matter at that point.”

He fished a cigarette out of a pack, took a lighter from a drawer and lit it. He exhaled as he gazed calmly up at me, assessing my reaction. I felt the color rise in my cheeks. He smirked.

“Right. In any case: you will be given three opportunities to walk away from this. Three times you can wear this ring and, while enduring what we put you through, take comfort that eventually you will have your freedom again. Your suitability, in effect, will be determined by whether or not you choose to slip this ring over your finger a fourth – and final – time.”

He tapped his cigarette over an ashtray before continuing.

“This is a test, in other words. Each time you wear the ring, you will be subjected to a trial meant to test your suitability. I won’t explain the nature of the trials, since some element of surprise is important for us to gauge you appropriately. You will pass the test if you endure all three trials and still return to submit yourself to us.” He stubbed out his cigarette.

“What I will tell you, Stephanie, is this: have your life affairs in order before wearing the ring. The first trial begins the very moment you slip it over your finger, and I am permitted to tell you that it will last no more than one real world clock day. Be advised we run at a clock rate of 90, so you could spend three months immersed in your first trial. Be prepared for that.”

He paused. “Also know that this offer expires in seven days. If you haven’t worn the ring by this time next week, it will de-rez. We reserve the right to take you by force at some later time, but you will never again be able to contact us voluntarily.”

Chapter 3

I opened my apartment door and threw the keys on the side table, a smile still lingering on my face.

Carol was an energetic, enthusiastic girl who spent most of her time in VR devoted to sexual trysts. I’d played with her a number of times before, and figured if anybody was going to get me back in touch with my male self, it would be her.

I closed my eyes and tried to take stock. My breasts heaved on my chest, rising and falling with my breath. They felt, I now realized, a little bigger, fuller.
